I was watching the Trooping of the Colour yesterday (an event to celebrate our Queen's 'official' birthday) which takes place every year and it got me to thinking how much this parade actually costs to set up and perform. Hundreds of soldiers and horses ae trained for many weeks before the day and the amount of preparation and security required is immense. The cost of this must run into millions...
It is nice to watch and no doubt a lot of people travel to London to see it but it is the same every year and I really do wonder if so much money should be spent on something that does not give a lot back to our country. This point of view could be translated to the Royal Family as a whole who inherit vast amounts of money, country estates and a life of luxury from the day they are born. A classic example is Prince William and Harry who have their newspapers ironed (!) every day and even have people to choose their clothes for them. Should anyone really be afforded this type of luxury when it's all paid for by the public?
The Royal Family is an integral part of our culture and history and do help stimulate our tourist industry and they are also greatly admired around the world (especially by American's) but they are heavy going on the old tax bill...
Maybe if we lost the Royal Family Britain would no longer be the same and would lose a lot of it's interestingness (there a great new word for you:)) and maybe they are fundamental to making Britain one of the most powerful countries in the world despite our small population and geography. Personally I believe that the British people are what makes Britain great- the never say die attitude, the 'getting on with it' without telling everyone in sight what we have done and that bulldog spirit is still there in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland when times get tough.
I must admit that I cannot make up my mind on this one- there are advantages and disadvantages to having a monarchy and I probably lean slightly towards seeing how we do without them but feel free to give us all some good arguments no matter which side of the fence you are on....
